Building a Committee

It was around this time last year that those of us interested in getting a Free Software conference pulled together in Saint Louis tried to get things rolling.  We weren’t able to do it and it looks like we won’t be able to do it again this year. However, there has been a great deal of response from folks saying that they would love for this event to happen. There was also much disappointment when we announced the delay. The biggest problem we’re facing is participation.

We need it at every level.

So here’s the rub: We need to start forming committees, getting people to commit to the event, and start doing things in order to make sure it happens. I am calling for anyone who can spend some time organizing, getting a venue lined up, finding speakers, advertisers, vendors, exhibitors, or what have you to let us know and let us know as soon as possible. We are going to put a hard limit on this. If we do not have a dedicated team of particpants ready to put this event together by June 1, 2012 then we will bury the whole thing entirely and never think of it again.

If you can help, are dedicated to the cause, please let us know. We want this event to happen, but we need YOU to make it happen.

  • As far as I know, you didn’t bother contacting any of the Linux or Unix Users Group leadership last year (2011). Nor, did you initiate any discussions on any of the various mailing lists in the St. Louis Metro Area.

This year has been no different; so, what do you expect as you have failed to spread the word. Nobody had brought your efforts to my attention. I only found your web site on my own, because I routinely search on Google search engine for St. Louis Unix, Linux and computer events.

The St. Louis Unix Users Group supports the main Linux Users Groups and keeps a Google calendar of all local Information Technology (IT) events and provides a routine ANNOUNCE mailing list of weekly events.

  • We did contact most of the KC and STL area LUGs and Linux-friendly organizations in late ’10 and again in early ’11 and received very few responses. I have sent an e-mail to you regarding this as well. We plan on trying to push a bit harder this time, but we’re all busy people and some help getting the word out would be appreciated. We will do our best to keep up with SLUUG and other area clubs, join the mailing lists and involve as many as we can to get this event pulled together this time.
