MAGNet Con Postponed

Hello, everyone. It is with regret that we announce that MAGNet Con is being pushed back until 2012. There are several reasons for this, but the most relevant is that we simply ran out of time to get the event off the ground this year. That being said, holding off until 2012 will allow us to make sure the conference is planned properly and goes off without a hitch. Here are our new immediate goals:

  1. Establish a core group of volunteers to make sure that the event is planned properly and in a timely manner.
  2. Create a speaker committee that will be tasked with finding talent for the show.
  3. Create a sponsorship committee that will work on attracting vendors and managing the exhibit portion of the conference.
  4. Create an entertainment committee that will be responsible for live events, pre- and post-party planning, etc.
  5. Promote the show with help from the local community as well as the Internet community at large.
  6. Schedule regular meetings so that all volunteers are kept up to speed on every aspect of the con as it develops.
  7. Put our best efforts forward to make MAGNet Con a huge success.

If you are interested in joining the core group of volunteers, please let us know as soon as possible by e-mail at volunteers@magnetcon.info. Our regular meetings will be scheduled weekly on Monday nights at 9:00pm Central Time. If you join our team, please be willing to attend meetings as often as possible. We will meet on IRC, channel #magnetcon on irc.freenode.net. If you need help using IRC, let us know and we’ll get you started.

We have heard good things from the community about our show and we know this announcement will disappoint many. We sincerely apologize for getting so far and then ultimately coming up short, but we will regroup and we will have an outstanding conference in 2012.

Introduction

The Mid-America Linux Fest is a project that has just begun. After seeing how popular the Ohio Linux Fest is, and witnessing how Linux Fests in general are beginning to proliferate, it seemed that a Linux Fest was needed in America’s heartland. Most activities of this kind are located on one coast or another, and several are headquartered in Ohio. And there’s nothing wrong with Ohio, but it seems that a location even more centralized could attract a much larger and more diverse group of conference attendees.

Missouri is very close to the geographic center of the United States. Within a 12-hour driving distance are Albuquerque, Atlanta, Birmingham, Chicago, Columbus, Dallas, Denver, Detriot, Houston, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, Nashville, New Orleans, Oklahoma City and many, many more parts of the country not listed. With four major cities which provide national and/or international airpots, popular night life and attractions and fantastic exhibition space, Missouri is a pefect place to hold an event of this kind.

The Mid-America Linux Fest is currently in the planning phase. We would like to have an event in 2010, but understand it is all too likely that we will not have everything lined up in time, and that after putting this all together, our inaugural conference will be in the late spring or early summer of 2011. If you are interested in helping to get this event off the ground, please e-mail info@midamericalinuxfest.org with your areas of expertise and your desire to help. With your help, we can make this a successful and rewarding endeavor.
